One Man's Journey - A Path for Others

Barry Albert who was an Electrical Technology graduate from 2009 shared with us what he’s been up to since graduating from NATS.  First a little background on Barry…Barry’s story can be considered somewhat of a typical profile amongst current, past and future students of NATS.  He started in the Electrical Technology program with the intent of pushing himself through it as fast he could so that he could get into the trade as quickly as possible.  It can be challenging for a lot of students to undertake a full time program and still meet the demands required of everyday life.  While attending school Barry held on to a full time job to supplement him to carry him through.  Eventually working the required hours became too much and Barry’s decision was to leave the job and finish school.  A decision that would eventually pay dividends later on.
Upon graduating from NATS, Barry was ready to take that next step and find a position in the trade.  He worked for some people, but it never fully materialized into a full time position that would allow him to get his apprenticeship under way.   One thing Barry did have was persistence and the self-confidence in his training and abilities that if he stuck with it, something would come up.  Through his travels Barry said that he had managed to talk to some people in his area that worked for Hydro One and he inquired about how and when they may be hiring next.  Every so often Barry would reconnect with them and remind them of his interest in working for Hydro One.
Eventually his persistence paid off as he was interviewed for a position as a Powerline Technician at Hydro One and as he went through all the interviewing steps etc. he was offered a position.   Two things that stood out from what Barry had told us about the interview process was that Hydro One was impressed with the level of vocational training that he had received from NATS.  Secondly it was his “soft skills” the he had adapted while being at the school that may have been the clincher for him in the interview stages more specifically his positive attitude and determination to achieve his goals.
Congratulations Barry, all the best in your new career at Hydro One!
